Abstract | William Greene Raoul of Georgia lived in the South, the West, New York, and Europe, held many jobs as manager and laborer, and mingled with all classes of society. His autobiography, tentatively titled Rolling Stone or The Proletarian Aristocrat, contains an account of his experiences, circa 1893-1935. Included are discussions of his experiences in a cotton mill in Lindale, Ga.; with prostitutes in Atlanta, Ga., 1890s; and at the Southern Saw Works in Atlanta, the South Atlantic Car and Manufacturing Co. in Waycross, Ga., 1904-1909, and the Acme Kitchen Furniture Co. in Chattanooga, Tenn. Raoul's experiences as a carpenter in Birmingham, Ala., and elsewhere, his involvement with the labor movement, and his relationships with women are also recounted. |
