Abstract | Anne Freeman Gales Root was the daughter of Raleigh editor, Weston Raleigh Gales (1803-1848) and the wife of Charles B. Root (born 1818), native of Massachusetts, who became a Raleigh businessman. The collection includes personal correspondence, chiefly 1841-1872, of Anne Freeman Gales Root and her daughter Love Root. The letters deal with women's activities, including education, social life in Raleigh, and other personal and family matters. Also included is a commonplace book, dated 1911, of limericks and other poems and short prose pieces, many referring to African Americans. |
