The early correspondence consists chiefly of typed copies and photostats of letters of the Stanly family. Beginning in 1832, there are papers of C.R. Kinney, lawyer of Elizabeth City, N.C., and his son-in-law, Harvey Stanly, Episcopal minister and grandson of John Wright Stanly. After Kinney's death in 1845, the letters are those of other members of the Stanly family. In 1924, Beckwith began work on Stanly and letters consist of correspondence connected with his research.
These papers include research materials, such as index cards, and clippings pertaining to Beckwith's biography of Stanly.
