Abstract | James Saxon Childers (1899-1965) of Alabama was a writer and editor. The collection contains autographed letters from American and European literary figures. Many of the letters were written to Childers, others were collected by him. Authors of letters include Countee Cullen (three letters), John Galsworthy (one), John Masefield (one), Matthew Arnold (one), Bret Harte (one), James Weldon Johnson (three), James Russell Lowell (one), John Stuart Mill (one), Christina Rossetti (one), Dante Gabriel Rossetti (one), Robert Southey (fourteen), and Hugh Walpole (one). The Southey letters, 1822-1837 and undated, are addressed to John Rickman and Rickman's wife, Susannah Postlethwaite Rickman. The majority of the letters are arranged alphabetically by last name of the author. There are also eight letters and notes by various authors from 1789-circa 1910 filed in folder 8. Please note, the Allan Roy Dafoe and Victor Hugo letters are missing. |
