Abstract | John Henry Murphy (1824-1889) was a resident of New Hanover (now Pender) County, N.C. The collection includes miscellaneous papers of Murphy consisting chiefly of items relating to David Gurganious and his estate, of which Murphy was administrator. There are five letters, 1862, from Gurganious while he was serving with the 51st North Carolina Regiment at James Island, S.C., mainly concerned with affairs at home. Also included are family letters, tax returns, and vouchers from the Murphy family and Wright family. |

John Henry Murphy (1824-1889) of New Hanover (now Pender) County, N.C., was the sixth child of Cornelius Murphy. He married Elizabeth Catherine (Kate) Wright (1836-1879), and they had five children. He at one time acted as the administrator of the estate of David Gurganious (died 1863), an officer in the 51st North Carolina Regiment, Confederate Army.

Also included are family letters, tax returns, and vouchers from the Murphy and Wright families. There is one letter, 1865, from J. C. Wright of the 46th North Carolina Regiment to his mother commenting on presidential peace efforts, conscription of freed slaves, and the exchange of prisoners. Also, one letter, 1871, to John Henry Murphy commenting on the impeachment of North Carolina Governor William Holden.
