Abstract | Hartwell Percy Spain was a volunteer Confederate soldier in the Darlington Guards on duty around Charleston, S.C. The collection is Spain's wartime diary, 3 January to 17 March and 4 August 1861 (about 75 pages); and the April 1867 issue of the "The Land We Love," a magazine published in Charlotte, N.C. The diary consists of a detailed narrative of Spain's daily life on Sullivan Islands and Morris Island, and at Darlington, S.C., including notes about his opinions and feelings, and descriptions of his surroundings. It also includes poems and miscellaneous memoranda. |
