Abstract | Henry S. Clarke was a member of the United States House of Representatives from North Carolina, 1845-1847, and afterwards a lawyer in Greenville, N.C. The collection includes photocopies of letters from Clarke of Beaufort County, N.C., to his wife, written from Washington, D.C., 1845-1846, and from a plantation he apparently owned near Gourdins Depot, S.C., 1861 and 1864. The letters chiefly concern personal news and Clarke's affection for his wife. |

Henry Selby Clarke (1809-1869) of Beaufort County, N.C., graduated from the University of North Carolina and served as a trustee of that institution, 1834-1854. He was a district solicitor, member of the State House of Commons, and member of the United States House of Representatives from North Carolina, 1845-1847, and afterwards a lawyer in Greenville, N.C.
