Abstract Cotten family members include Robert Randolph Cotten of Pitt County, N.C., his wife, Sallie (Southall) Cotten, (1846-1929), and their children and grandchildren. The collection includes family correspondence of Robert Randolph Cotten, of his wife, Sallie (Southall) Cotten, and of their children and grandchildren. Sallie (Southall) Cotten's papers concern women's rights, state and national women's organizations, women's war work, 1916-1918, the Virginia Dare Memorial Association, and her many other interests and activities, as well as family and social matters. Also included are her scrapbooks, 1892-1929, writings, speeches, and personal memoranda, and letters from her son, Lyman A. (Lyman Atkinson) Cotten (1874-1926), as a captain in the United States Navy. The Addition of February 1995 includes family papers, chiefly relating to Lyman Atkinson Cotten, Elizabeth Henderson Cotten, their sons John Henderson Cotten and Lyman A. Cotten, and Lyman A. Cotten's wife, Patsy White Cotten. Included are many letters John Henderson Cotten wrote to his mother while he served in the Navy, and many items generated by Lyman A. Cotten during his tenure as professor of English at the University of North Carolina, 1940-1974. The Addition of September 1995 consists of letters and other items chiefly relating to Lyman Cotten Junior.
