This series contains the papers of Marshall, Holbrooke, and Bridge families, including Josiah Marshall (1773-1841), a Boston merchant, and his daughters Charlotte and Marian, along with Marian's husband John George Holbrooke, and their children Charlotte, Stephen, and George. Items from 1816-1828 consist of business papers of Josiah Marshall and his partner Dixey Wildes and include correspondence, letters, bills of lading, bills of sale, and other items related to the shipping business out of Boston, Mass., to Asia, including China and Hawaii, referred to here as the Sandwich Islands. Papers from 1829-1839 include scattered business correspondence as well as letters from Josian Marshall's family and friends. Correspondence,1840-1849, chiefly consists of letters addressed to Marian and her sister Charlotte. The marriage settlement contract for Marian Marshall and John George Holbrooke is dated June 1844, and that of Charlotte and Horatio Bridge is dated May 1846. Several letters from 1846-1848 are written from Horatio while he was on the U. S. Frigate United States, along with letters from Charlotte in 1848, written in ports in Spain, Italy, and Malta. Also included in this period are letters from relatives in Boston, Mass., Philadelphia, Pa., Providence, R.I., and Halifax, Mass. Some of these letters concern religion and Apostolic teachings. Correspondence from 1850-1860 is chiefly letters received by Marian Holbrooke, who sometimes resided in Philadelphia. Letters received regard business trips by her husband, letters from her daughter Charlotte, family business transactions, claims by Marshall and Wilde against the government of the Sandwich Islands, and religious matters. Letters from 1861-1865 contain family, social, and religious correspondence chiefly addressed to Marian Holbrooke in New York, Charlotte Bridge in Washington, D.C., and Charlotte Holbrooke, who spent most of the winter seasons with the Bridges. Charlotte Holbrooke's letters to her parents and brothers give a detailed account of social life in Washington, D.C., especially among government officials and army and naval officers and their families. Civil War-related letters include some letters from Theodore Kruger, who served as an army chaplain with the "Garibaldi Guard" in Washington D.C. and the northern Virgina area in 1861. Correspondence from 1866-1868 chiefly contains family and social letters received by Marian Holbrooke, her daughter Charlotte, and son George O. Holbrooke.

This addition primarily contains family and personal correspondence of the Perkins family of Connecticut, New York, and Athens, Pa., and their Eglin connections. The papers relate to the Maurice family in that Ethel Eglin married George H. Maurice in 1898.
The earliest item is dated 1762, and is a summons from Charles City County, Va., Peter vs. Eppes. Beginning in 1793 is the correspondence of Rebecca Huntington, daugher of Felix Huntinton (1749-1823) of Norwich, Conn., and her Perkins family relatives. Along with family letters are deeds of members of the Perkins family for land in New London County, Conn. The correspondence from the 1820s and 1830s primarily consists of letters between Rebecca Huntington, who moved to Ithaca, N.Y., around 1820, and other women in her family. The letters of the 1840s and 1850s are correspondence of Edward H. Perkins of Athens, Pa., and his family, chiefly his brothers and sisters in New York and the New England area. There are several letters from 1861-1863 that concern the Civil War, including some letters by Henry E. Alvord, lieutenant in the 2nd Mass. Calvary. Papers from 1866-1896 are scattered items related to Alvord, Perkins, and Eglin families. There are also scattered papers from 1901-1965 addressed to Henry W. T. and Patty Eglin in Lewinsville, Va., along with other letters. Also included are genealogical and biographical information, and information about the Jackson house in Lewinsville, Va.; an account book, circa 1778-1790, and an arithmetic book circa 1793-1796. Note that a new numbering sequence has been applied to this addition.
