Abstract | William A. Lash was president of the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railroad, with offices at Greensboro, N.C., and owner of a farm at Walnut Cove, Stokes County, N.C. The collection includes railroad and other business papers, mainly 1892-1893, of Lash relating to the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railroad and to his farm at Walnut Cove, Stokes County, N.C. Many of the railroad business papers are letters to and from bankers and brokers affiliated with the Bank of New Hanover, the Bank of Fayetteville, and Murchison & Co. of New York, N.Y., and Wilmington, N.C., about railroad bonds and other financial matters. J. Turner Morehead and R.T. Gray are among the major correspondents. Also included are letters about the business of the North State Improvement Company. Of particular note is a letter, 1891, from Thomas M. Holt about problems of the nation's economy. Papers relating to Lash's farm include letters from J.W. Davis in 1890 and W. Withers after 1890, who were apparently managing Lash's business in Walnut Cove. These letters discuss crops, rents, farm work, visitors to the farm, and other matters. |
