Abstract | David A. Lockmiller (1906-2005) was an author and professor of history and political science. The collection includes correspondence and papers, 1937-1958, of Lockmiller in connection with the preparation of his biography, Enoch H. Crowder: Soldier, Lawyer, and Statesman (1955); forty-four scattered items, 1916-1931, from the papers of General Crowder (1859-1932), consisting chiefly of his correspondence with General Hugh S. Johnson about selective service and other matters; and letters, 1939-1944, relating to Lockmiller's The Consolidation of the University of North Carolina (1942), clippings about the book, and correspondence with Joseph Morrison at the University of North Carolina about the latter's biography of Governor O. Max Gardner. |

David A. Lockmiller (1906-2005) was an author and professor of history and political science. He was educated at Emory University, Cumberland University, and the University of North Carolina. Among his published works are Enoch H. Crowder: Soldier, Lawyer, and Statesman (1955), a biography, and The Consolidation of the University of North Carolina (1942).

The items include letters and memoranda received by Lockmiller from former friends and associates of Crowder including Mrs. Albert Payne Duval, Edward Schulz, John H. Wigmore, Otto Schoenrich, Matthew F. Steele, H. E. Stephenson, John Bassett Moore, and Nelle Crowder. Also included are scattered items, 1916-1931, from the papers of Enoch H. Crowder, chiefly consisting of correspondence with Hugh S. Johnson about selective service and other matters. There are also some drafts of portions of Lockmiller's biography of Crowder, photographs of both men, and other items.
