expand/collapse Expand/collapse Historical Information

In 1973, the History Department of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill established an oral history program devoted to the study of the southern region of the United States.

The Southern Oral History Program collects interviews with Southerners who have made significant contributions to various fields of human endeavor. In addition, the Program undertakes special projects with the purpose of rendering historically visible those whose experience is not reflected in traditional written sources. Interviews are conducted by Program staff, graduate students, faculty members, and consultants. The Program also serves as a collecting agency, accepting donations of tapes and transcripts of interviews conducted by other researchers.

expand/collapse Expand/collapse Scope and Content

The Southern Oral History Program Collection, Series F: Fellowship of Southern Churchmen contains interviews with members of the Fellowship of Southern Churchmen (FSC) conducted by Dallas A. Blanchard. The FSC was originally called the Younger Churchmen of the South, and first met in May 1934 at Monteagle, Tenn. As an interracial and interdenominational Christian organization, it worked closely with such groups as the NAACP and the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith for the improvement of social conditions in the rural South. The interviewer was Dallas A. Blanchard, who received funding for the project from the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion. Interviews focus on members' participation in the FSC, and interviewees address their previous and subsequent activities.
