Back to TopThe Lodwick Charles Hartley papers best document his activities as a teacher, writer, and literary critic. A large part of the correspondence consists of letters from professors at other universities responding to inquiries by Hartley or asking for assistance from Hartley. His writings include a number of published criticisms and essays that may have also been used as teaching notes. There is not a great deal of documentation on Hartley's successful efforts to preserve the liberal arts program at North Carolina State University.
There is also not a great deal of coverage of Hartley's personal life. Selected periods are covered in his correspondence with his mother (circa 1928-1945), with Eleanor Duvall (circa 1931-1935), and in his later years, with Joan Givner (1973-1979). The letters to Duvall provide a profile of Hartley as a student. Selections of his poetry and his diaries in Series 2 also offer some personal insight, although these are limited mostly to the 1920s.
The pictures are primarily of a professional nature, promotional photographs of Hartley and of British literary landmarks like the home of Lawrence Sterne. There do not appear to be any family photographs.
The papers were received from Hartley's estate in July of 1979. Some files created by Hartley were maintained in their original order, but arrangement was imposed on other papers received in no particular order.
Back to TopChiefly incoming letters to Lodwick Hartley from colleagues, writers, friends, and family members. Also included are outgoing letters from Hartley to his mother, Nannie Kneece Hartley, to Eleanor Duvall, and to Professor Joan Givner. Letters from prominent correspondents, from individuals represented by a large number of letters, and from people whose letters were already arranged are arranged alphabetically by author or subject, and are filed first. The remainder of the letters follow in chronological order.
Most of the prominent correspondents are represented by one or two letters, usually replies to requests by Hartley that those individuals speak at NCSU. Chief exceptions are Eudora Welty (12 items) and Allen Tate (5 items). Others represented by more than two letters are Helen Bevington, Frances Gray Patton, Katherine Anne Porter, and Katharine Worth.
The largest file consists of about 175 letters from Hartley to his mother, many from Europe, circa 1931. There are also about 65 items from Hartley to Eleanor Duvall. Hartley and Duvall apparently shared a number of friends, probably from Batesburg or Furman University. The correspondence is almost entirely of a personal rather than professional nature. There is a nearly complete set of correspondence between Joan Givner of the University of Regina, Canada, and Hartley. Givner consulted Hartley in reference to her book on Katherine Anne Porter, and their professsional interests became the basis for a friendship. The file of about 195 items is the most comprehensive information on Hartley during the 1970s. (There is additional Givner material in Series 4.)
There are a number of files created by Hartley concerning specific research and publications, including about 150 items about Lawrence Sterne and approximately 75 items about William Cowper. Correspondents are mostly professional colleagues. There are also about 75 items on his novel Plum Tree Lane.
The chronological file consists of about 500 items. Correspondents are mainly professors at other universities in the U. S. and Great Britain offering criticism, congratulations, or assistance on topics related to English literature and Hartley's publications. There are also letters from friends Hartley made while in Europe and from former students, and letters on financial affairs. In some cases, copies of Hartley's replies are included.
Literary essays, book reviews, diaries, short stories, novels, a play, and poems by Lodwick Hartley, and announcements, notices, and reviews relating to Hartley and his published works.
Most of the literary essays deal with eighteenth-century English literary subjects, particularly William Cowper, Samuel Johnson, and Lawrence Sterne. Also included are essays on Katherine Anne Porter. Essays arranged by subject are followed by a collection of assorted literary essays.
There are about 260 book reviews, most written by Hartley for the News and Observer (Raleigh, N.C.). These include both typescripts and published versions. The diary volumes begin when Hartley was in high school and continue through his sophmore year in college at Furman University. Included with the bound volumes are fragments dating from 1938 to 196l.
Other writings by Hartley include nine short stories, some of which have been published. Also included are three unpublished novels, one play, and about 150 poems.
Finally, Series 2 includes about 25 printed articles or notices about Hartley, about 35 reviews of his books, and the contents of two scrapbooks (about 100 items).
Mainly photographs of Lodwick Hartley, beginning with his naval career in 1944, at age 38, until his death in 1979. Included are photos from two trips to Great Britain and one photo of Katherine Anne Porter.
Course syllabi, research material on Katherine Anne Porter, legal forms relating to publications, and assorted other items.
Course syllabi are a representative group of eleven items including a set of teaching notes on Gray's Elegy.
The material from Joan Givner contains essays and research materials on Katherine Anne Porter. Included are copies of letters from Porter and one copy of a letter from Eudora Welty. There is other Givner material located in Series 1.
