| Abstract | The Cheairs and Hughes families of Maury County, Tenn. included Nathaniel Francis Cheairs (1818-1914). The collection contains correspondence, deeds, wills, and other financial and legal papers, genealogical notes, family photographs, and other material of Nathaniel Francis Cheairs and other members of the Cheairs and Hughes families of Maury County, Tenn. Most of the correspondence and financial papers relate to the business dealings of Nathaniel Francis Cheairs and include papers relating to land transactions in Maury County and a sawmill in Arkansas. Two copies of typed transcriptions of memoirs are included: "Kentucky Memoirs of Uncle Sam Williams," edited with commentary by Nathaniel Cheairs Hughes Junior, about the life and family of Samuel Williams (1831-1927), who was raised in Bourbon County, Ky., and wrote for newspapers in Louisville, Ky., St. Louis, Mo., and other locations; and "Personal Experiences in the War Between the States," by Nathaniel Francis Cheairs, who served with the 3rd Tennessee Regiment. The most frequent correspondence is from Nathaniel Francis Cheairs, written in Madison, Ark., to his son, William McKissack Cheairs, in Spring Hill, Tenn. The letters deal with the operation of Nathaniel's sawmill in Arkansas, poverty in the region, and family matters. Also included are a few business letters from Nathaniel Cheairs, and letters among his children and other relatives.
