Since August 2017, we have added ethnic and racial identities for individuals and families represented in collections. To determine identity, we rely on self-identification; other information supplied to the repository by collection creators or sources; public records, press accounts, and secondary sources; and contextual information in the collection materials. Omissions of ethnic and racial identities in finding aids created or updated after August 2017 are an indication of insufficient information to make an educated guess or an individual's preference for identity information to be excluded from description. When we have misidentified, please let us know at wilsonlibrary@unc.edu.
Back to TopThe following terms from Library of Congress Subject Headings suggest topics, persons, geography, etc. interspersed through the entire collection; the terms do not usually represent discrete and easily identifiable portions of the collection--such as folders or items.

Hamilton Harris Hobgood of Louisburg, N.C., was born on 23 March 1911. He earned a B.A. in education from the University of North Carolina in 1932 and a law degree from Wake Forest College of Law in 1941. While a law student, Hobgood also served on the Franklin County, N.C., bench. After law school, Hobgood served four years in the Marine Corps, until 1946, and two terms in the North Carolina Senate, from 1951 to 1954. In 1955, Governor Luther Hodges appointed him to the ninth district of the North Carolina Superior Court. Hobgood estimated that he presided over 60,000 cases in his 24 years on the Superior Court, but he is best known for presiding over the racially charged Joan Little murder trial in 1975. Other highlights of his career included serving as president of the North Carolina Conference of Superior Court Judges in 1967 and on numerous committees related to juvenile justice, prison reform, and sentencing. Hobgood retired in 1979, but continued to work as an emergency Superior Court judge until 1990. Hobgood died 17 November 1995 in Louisburg, N.C.
Back to TopThe collection includes trial materials, committee materials, speeches, prisoners' letters, personal correspondence and other files of Hamilton H. Hobgood, a white North Carolina Superior Court Judge. There are records, notes and other materials for the 1975 Joan Little murder trial in Raleigh, N.C., and thousands of other trials over which Hobgood presided. Committee materials document his work with the North Carolina Conference of Superior Court Judges; the North Carolina Bar Association Penal System Study Committee; the North Carolina Commission on Sentencing, Criminal Punishment and Rehabilitation; the North Carolina Commission on Correctional Programs; and the North Carolina Governor's Crime Commission.
Back to TopArrangement: Hobgood's original numerical filing system has been preserved. Files that do not have a numerical designation are arranged alphabetically by subject before the numbered series begins. The numbered files begin with "7" and end at "121," with many numbers in between unused, or previously removed from the collection. Hobgood's trial notepads, which seem to relate to files numbered "50," are arranged alphabetically by county after the numbered series of files. There are a number of trial notepads of unknown counties filed at the end. Because of this complicated arrangement scheme, researchers are advised to review the entire finding aid to be sure of locating all files that may be of interest.
Audiotape T-4246/1 |
Tape recording of speech by Hamlton H. Hobgood before the 13th Annual North Carolina Press-Broadcasters Court Reporting Seminar, Institute of Government, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 7 November 1975, under the leadership of Elmer Oettinger, assistant director of the Institute. The speech deals with Hobgood's political and judicial career, primarily the trial of Joan Little in August 1975, over which he presided. Topics include his relations with the press during the trial; trial security (bomb threats, odd spectators, assassination threats, jury intimidation); lawyers involved in the trial, especially John Wilkinson, Jerry Paul, Morris Dees, Karen Galloway, and William Kunstler; and the need for reforms raised during the trial. Included are several questions from the audience about the trial, including the citation of attorney Jerry Paul for contempt and the problem of trial delays. |
