Abstract | Maud Truxton Henderson was an Episcopal deaconess from Lexington, Va., who served as a missionary in China, 1903-1946. The collection contains letters from Maud Henderson in Shanghai, China, written to her half-sister, Mrs. Raven I. McDavid, describing her daily life and work with refugees in the city, primarily in the 1930s; letters from friends, relatives, and associates of Henderson; photographs; and other items. While generally of a personal and family nature, some of the letters of Deaconess Henderson illustrate social conditions in the war-torn China of the 1930s. Some letters relate to Henderson family history. Photographs primarily picture Henderson and her "grandchildren" in China. A small group of miscellaneous materials relates to events in the area of Lexington, Va., after the Civil War, particularly the death of Robert E. Lee in 1870. |
