Size 0.5 feet of linear shelf space (approximately 20 items)
Abstract Brewer and Paschal families of Chatham County, N.C., including Stephen Wiley Brewer (1835-1897), Confederate officer and county sheriff; his wife Mary Catharine Paschal Brewer (1846-1922); R. B. Paschal (1820-1870), who was elected Chatham County sheriff in 1854 and served six successive terms; and George Washington Paschal (1869-1956). There are also materials of the related Tilley family, including Bert Q. Tilley, motorcycle enthusiast and owner of Tilley's Cyclery, Raleigh, N.C., who was also a partner in Raleigh Flying Serice, operators of Raleigh Airport, Inc., and Poindexter Field. Chiefly family history materials relating to the Brewer and Paschal families. Most of the items are photocopies, but there are some original materials, especially short biographical notes on family members. Included is a compilation of photocopied documents about the ancestors and descendants of Stephen Wiley and Mary Catharine Brewer; Civil War materials relating to Stephen Wiley Brewer's service with the 26th North Carolina Infantry Regiment and his imprisonment at Johnson's Island, where he compiled a roster of Confederate prisoners; and other Brewer family materials. There are similar materials for the Paschal family, especially typed notes, recollections, and other materials of George Washington Paschal (1869-1956), and photocopies of typed transcriptions of R. B. Paschal's diaries dated 1860, 1861, 1863, and 1864, with extremely brief entries, usually providing a record of the weather and Paschal's activities. There are, however, some entries that reflect war activities, as when, in 1861, Paschal attended several meetings aimed at raising volunteer troops, and others offering slight references to the activities of other family members, as when Stephen Wiley Brewer was taken prisoner in 1863. Also include are an album containing photographs, clippings, and other items, 1912-1940s, relating to Bert Q. Tilley, with numerous photographs of Tilley and others either posed on motorcycles or racing them. Also included are photographs relating to Bert Q. Tilly Advertising, a firm that seems to have specialized in sound car advertising, and to airplanes and airports, especially Poindexter Field in Raleigh. There are also a few photographs relating to Tilley's World War I service.
