Abstract | Chiefly account books recording transactions relating to businesses operated by various members of the Rangeley family of Virginia. Early books, 1823 through the 1860s, pertain to an establishment operated by John Rangeley of Patrick County, Va., which may have been a combination tannery and general store. By the 1850s, account books show John Rangeley operating in Henry County, Va., and in the 1870s the Rangeleys appear to have been operating their tannery and dry goods business under the name Rangeley and Son. Account books relating to W. H. Rangeley's dry goods and produce store in the town of Preston, Henry County, begin in 1885. Also included is a volume which, besides farm accounts, 1922-1923, includes brief diary entries probably written by George C. Rangeley, also of Henry County. There are also the following volumes: Mount Bethel Sunday School record book, 1892-1894; a poorhouse record book, circa 1929, listing paupers of Henry County by race and including brief entries describing the lives and deaths of particular individuals; and "Pioneer Days of Rangeley, Maine," 1949, printed pamphlet about the northern branch of the Rangeley family. |

Account books, chiefly recording transactions relating to businesses operated by various members of the Rangeley family. Early books, 1823 through the 1860s, chiefly relate to an establishment operated primarily by John Rangeley of Patrick County, Va. This business may have been a combination tannery and general store. Some entries concern making, repairing, and selling such items as shoes and saddles; other entries relate to buying and selling items typically stocked in a general or dry goods store. In most of the account books relating to John Rangeley, there is mention of dealings with a James Rangeley of Portland, Maine. These entries show that there was a connection between the Virginia Rangeleys and the Maine Rangeleys discussed in "Pioneer Days of Rangeley, Maine" (see volume 24).
By the 1850s, John Rangeley appears to have been doing business in Henry County, Va., which is just to the east of Patrick County. The move from Patrick County to Henry County appears to have been documented in an 1856 draft of John Rangeley's bill of sale for property in Patrick County. This bill of sale, included as an enclosure in volume 8, was registered in both Patrick and Henry counties. The name of the buyer and the price paid are not included. By the 1870s, the Rangeleys appear to have been operating their tannery and dry goods business under the name Rangeley and Son. In 1876, entries appear in volume 13 for the estate of John Rangeley, perhaps the father of the John Rangeley whose estate accounts appear in the late 1890s in volume 15, with W. H. Rangeley as administrator.
Account books relating to W. H. Rangeley's store in the town of Preston, Henry County, begin in 1885 with volume 14. Letterhead for this store shows that Rangeley established the store in 1860 as a "dealer in general merchandise and country produce." Also included among the account books is volume 19, which, besides general accounts, 1922-1923, includes farm diary entries for the same years. These entries probably document the activities of George C. Rangeley, also of Henry County.
Note that some volumes, particularly volumes 10 and 13, contain entries spanning considerable time periods.
