Abstract | Lucy D. Burgess taught English in schools in Gatesville, Gates County, N.C., and South Mills, Camden County, N.C., in the 1940s. She also wrote poetry, plays, and stories, and supplied newspapers with feature and local news articles. Her husband Fred Ross Burgess was principal of Gatesville High School, 1940-1941, and of South Mills High School, 1942- 1944. Their two sons were Fred Ross, Jr., and Colburn Randolph Burgess. Scrapbooks relating to Lucy D. Burgess's teaching and writing careers. "Poems and Feature Articles by Lucy D. Burgess, Gatesville, N.C., 1940-1941" contains clippings of articles that appeared in the Gates County Index, the Daily Advance, the Greensboro Daily News, the State Magazine, and other publications, along with typed copies of Burgess's poems. Some of the entries were annotated by Burgess, who explained how articles came to be written and tracked the progress of her career. "South Mills School, 1942-1943, 1943-1944" documents two academic years at South Mills High School, South Mills, N.C. Included are letters, programs, ticket stubs, clippings, printing bills, photographs, and other materials relating to activities at the school from opening bell to commencement. Some items relate to principal Fred Ross Burgess and others relate to scrap metal drives and other programs carried out at the school in support of the war effort. |
