Robert Boone Outland Sr., 1907- , a physician, was originally from Rich Square, N.C. He attended Wake Forest University, 1925-1930, and the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, 1930-1934. He did his residency at Municipal Hospital and Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and worked in Elm City, N.C.

This collection consists of letters from Outland to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Outland of Rich Square, N.C. The collection spans the years during Outland's undergraduate studies at Wake Forest University, his medical studies at the University of Pennsylvania, and his residency and early work as a doctor in Washington, D.C., and Elm City, N.C. Most of the letters discuss Outland's academic life, his personal life, and the activities of family and friends. There are some references to economic and social conditions during the Depression and to the difficulty of living as a Southerner in a Northern city.
