Abstract Herschel V. Anderson, a native of North Carolina and later South Dakota state librarian and director of the Mesa Public Library in Arizona, served as a cryptographer and then cryptographic security clerk, 93rd Signal Battalion, 7th United States Army, outside Stuttgart, Germany, January 1956-July 1957. The collection contains letters, postcards, and scrapbooks of Vince Anderson during his cryptography service with the United States Army in Germany, 1956-1957. Letters to his parents in Raleigh, N.C., describe daily life in the Army, his fellow soldiers, and his explorations of Germany and beyond. They tell of his travels in the Black Forest; to Heidelburg and other parts of Germany; to and around Lake Constance; into Switzerland and Liechtenstein; to Copenhagen, Denmark; to Sweden; to Brussels, Belgium; and to London, Cambridge, Ely, and York, England. The scrapbooks contain picture postcards and written descriptions of places that Anderson visited in Europe. The addition of September 2000 contains typed transcriptions of memoirs by Mary Octavia Kemper Anderson (1871-1960) and her son, Paul Kemper Anderson (1898-1987).

Arrangement: chronological.

Scrapbooks kept by Vince Anderson while he was serving in the United States Army stationed in Germany in 1956-1957. The scrapbooks document his travel, mostly through picture postcards, with handwritten captions. Occasionally, Anderson wrote longer descriptions of places he had seen or people he had met. Anderson sometimes used German place names and spellings and sometimes English. Some of his descriptions are lengthy; other are minimal.

25 January 1956-5 June 1956. Anderson discusses his travels within Baden-Wurttemburg, Germany, and anticipates going outside the district.

6 September 1956-25 November 1956. An 11-page typed letter mounted in the beginning of the scrapbook describes Anderson's travel from Boblingen through Copenhagen to Bornholm. The remainder of the trip and the sights he saw in Denmark and Sweden are illustrated by picture postcards and Anderson's annotations.

December 1956. Scrapbook of a trip from Stuttgart through Heidelburg; Cologne; Brussels; and England, including London, Cambridge, Ely, Peterborough, and York. There are no annotations in this scrapbook. There are many picture postcards from Brussels and London, postcards of Ely Cathedral and Peterborough Cathedral, and a few maps.
