Abstract | Blue family members included Malcolm James Blue; his wife, Margaret Monroe Blue (d. 1934); and their seven children. The family lived in Efland, N.C., until Malcolm Blue's death in 1914. Lena Blue (b. 1880) moved to Raeford, N.C. Jane Cameron Blue (b. 1883) and Jean P. Blue (b. 1890) moved to Raleigh, the latter after serving as an army nurse in Brest, France, and Coblenz, Germany. John Wilmer Blue (1892-1934) joined the United States Army in 1917 and served with the American Expeditionary Forces in Siberia. He was killed playing polo at Fort Benning, Ga, in 1934. Blue family papers consist primarily of letters among various members of the family, 1913-1934. Included are a series of letters from John Wilmer Blue about military life in Siberia, where he was serving with the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I, and other letters he wrote to his mother prior to his death in 1934 as a result of a accident while playing polo; several letters from John Wilmer Blue's sister, Jean Blue, to various family members while she served as an army nurse in Coblenz, Germany, in 1919; and letters offering condolence after the death of another sister, Flora Blue, in the influenza epidemic of 1919. There are also photographs of various members of the Blue family, primarily John Wilmer Blue; official documents relating to John Wilmer Blue's military career; news clippings about members of the Blue and related McFadyen families; letters addressed to Carol Melton from acquaintances of John Wilmer Blue that were written in response to her inquiries about him, 1982-1984; and John Wilmer Blue's 1915 Roanoke College annual. |

The Blue family included Malcolm James Blue (d. 1914); his wife, Margaret Monroe Blue (d. 1934); and their seven children. The family lived in Efland, N.C., until Malcolm Blue's death in 1914. Lena Blue (b. 1880) moved to Raeford, N.C. Jane Cameron Blue (b. 1883) and Jean P. Blue (b. 1890) moved to Raleigh, the latter after serving as an army nurse in Brest, France, and Coblenz, Germany, during and after World War I. Flora Blue (d. 1919) died of influenza during the epidemic of 1919. John Wilmer Blue (1892-1934) attended Roanoke College from 1913 to 1916, but left without receiving a degree. He studied dentistry at Atlanta Dental College from 1916 to 1917, before enlisting in the United States Army at Fort McPherson, Ga. He volunteered for the American Expeditionary Forces and served in Siberia for two years. He was then posted to Manila, where he was promoted to the rank of captain. He was eventually posted to Fort Benning, Ga., where he was killed playing polo on 18 November 1934. His mother died two days later on 20 November 1934.
