Abstract | Margaret Rogers Chandler (fl. 1780s-1860), daughter of John Rogers (1723-1789), patriot leader, member of the Continental Congress, and first chancellor of Maryland, was also descended from the Lee family of Virginia. She married Walter Story Chandler in 1799 and resided in Georgetown, D.C., where she raised a large number of children. One of her sons, Colonel Daniel Thomas Chandler (1820-1877) served on General Robert E. Lee's staff during the Civil War. The collection includes letters, family histories, genealogical papers, and financial and legal documents relating mainly to members of the Chandler, Lee, and Rogers families of Virginia and Maryland during the 18th and early 19th centuries. Many of these papers were apparently compiled through genealogical research conducted by Margaret Rogers Chandler. Letters from family members often include genealogical information in reply to Margaret Chandler's inquiries. Most of the correspondence is with Chandler's son, Colonel Daniel Thomas Chandler (1820-1877), concerning family history and family business. Many of the legal and financial documents relate to Daniel Thomas Chandler and his sister, Mary Chandler. Financial information concerns bank dealings and taxes. Legal documents include wills, real estate dealings, deeds, and promises of indenture. A 1926 real estate agreement's connection to the collection is unclear. |

Margaret Rogers Chandler (fl. 1780s-1860) was the daughter of John Rogers (1723-1789), patriot leader, member of the Continental Congress, and first chancellor of Maryland (appointed in 1778). Margaret Chandler was also descended from the Lee family of Virginia. She married Walter Story Chandler in 1799 and resided in Georgetown, D.C., where she raised a large number of children. One of her sons, Colonel Daniel Thomas Chandler (1820-1877) was captured during the Civil War, imprisoned, and then released in exchange for the nephew of Governor Andrew Johnson of Tennessee. Subsequently, Daniel Chandler served on General Robert E. Lee's staff, and, having visited Andersonville Prison in that capacity, was a witness at the trial of camp commander Major Henry Wirz.

Several of the documents, including wills and records of births and deaths from the Story family bible, are dated copies. Several of these copies are also annotated with additional family history by Margaret Chandler, and some of the copies appear to be in Margaret Chandler's handwriting.
