Abstract | William C. Friday served as president of the University of North Carolina System, 1957-1986. Following his resignation, Friday accepted a position as president of the William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust, guiding the philanthropy's support of educational endeavors. In 1999, Friday retired from public service. The collection includes correspondence, meeting materials, reports, clippings, speeches, honors, administrative records, photographs, and other papers related to William C. Friday's career following his retirement as president of the University of North Carolina System. These records, bulk 1985-1999, document Friday's professional and personal endeavors, including work with the Knight Foundation Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics; the Center for Creative Leadership; the Rural Economic Development Center; the Center for Public Television; TIAA-CREF; and the University of North Carolina System and its individual campuses, especially UNC-Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University, and East Carolina University. William C. Friday was born on 13 July 1920 to David Lathan and Mary Elizabeth Rowan Friday in Raphine, Va. Friday grew up in Dallas, N.C., in Gaston County. He was graduated from North Carolina State College in 1941 and began his career in college administration as the assistant to the Dean of Students at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. On 13 May 1942, Friday married Ida Howell. They had three daughters: Frances, Mary, and Betsy. Friday served in the United States Naval Reserve during World War II and earned a law degree from the University of North Carolina Law School in 1948.
In 1956, Friday became president of the Consolidated University of North Carolina and subsequently the University of North Carolina System. Friday's presidency lasted thirty years, and he oversaw the expansion of the state university system from three campuses to sixteen. Following his resignation from the University of North Carolina System in 1986, William C. Friday accepted a position as president of the William R. Kenan, Jr., Fund. After two years, Friday became executive director of the William R. Kenan, Jr., Charitable Trust, guiding the philanthropy's support of educational endeavors. In 1999, Friday retired from public service.

Chiefly correspondence, meeting materials, reports, and clippings about the efforts of the Knight Foundation Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics (Knight Commission) to produce a reform agenda for college sports. William C. Friday and Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., co-chaired the Knight Commission and led the study of rising problems. Included are videotaped media coverage and a dissertation on the Commission's attempt to address growing concerns about abuses in athletics. These papers describe the problems in intercollegiate athletics, responsibilities of academic institutions and collegiate sports organizations, debate on principal issues, and the Commission's recommendations.

Chiefly correspondence, reports, memoranda, and related administrative documentation describing the operation of the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) and its leadership training programs. Also included are meeting materials, 1988-1996, comprised of agendas, minutes, financial statements, summary reports, lists of officers, committee assignments, nominating information, and other items. Established by H. Smith Richardson, Sr., in Greensboro, N.C., CCL is a nonprofit educational institute devoted to leadership development. William C. Friday served as chair of the Center's first board and subsequently on its Board of Trustees and Board of Governors.

Chiefly meeting materials, 1987-1991, discussing the policies and projects supported by the Rural Economic Development Center (REDC). Included are agendas, minutes, correspondence, proposals, research, and other items about rural economic development. These materials discuss poverty, entrepreneurship, minorities, agriculture, business, natural resources, infrastructure, financing, and leadership training. William C. Friday directed the establishment of the REDC and served on the organization's board.

Chiefly correspondence, bulk 1986-1999, between William C. Friday and WUNC-TV staff, various individuals and other organizations about his television interview show, North Carolina People. The show began airing in 1971 and has featured one-on-one interviews with a variety of North Carolinians. Correspondence includes suggestions for guests, state and local news topics, and information on public television operations.
