Abstract Thomas J. Carey of New Branford, Conn., served as a private with Company E of the 15th Connecticut Infantry Regiment in the spring and early summer of 1865. The collection contains the diary kept by Thomas J. Carey during the Civil War, with a few later entries. During the Civil War, his unit was posted to Lenoir County, N.C., and Craven County, N.C., in eastern North Carolina. Carey's diary contains descriptions of New Bern, N.C.; various skirmishes; the Battle of Wise Forks; provost duty at Kinston, N.C.; friendly relationships and conversations with local inhabitants; and his reactions to Lee's surrender and Lincoln's assassination. Company E was mustered out of service on 27 June 1865 and returned home to New Haven, Conn., to be discharged on 12 July 1865. Later entries address Carey's reintegration into civilian life and his wedding. A partial transcript is included.

During this time, his unit was posted to Lenoir and Craven counties in eastern North Carolina, and he participated in the Battle of Wise Forks and the military occupation of Kinston, N.C. Company E was mustered out on 27 June 1865 and returned home to New Haven, Conn., to be discharged on 12 July 1865.
