Abstract | Jabez B. Hunt served as a sergeant in the 2nd North Carolina Cavalry Regiment, Company F, during the Civil War. He enlisted 17 June 1861 in Guilford County, N.C., and died of febris typhoid at a hospital in Richmond, Va., 13 July 1863. Hunt spent time at Camp Johnson, Va., and Gordonsville, Va., before falling ill in the spring of 1863 and spending his last days at Hanover Academy Hospital near Richmond, Va., and Camp Winder Hospital in Richmond, Va. The collection includes letters from Jabez B. Hunt while serving with the 2nd North Carolina Cavalry Regiment during the Civil War. Most of the letters are to Hunt's parents; two are to his nephew or sister. The two letters from 1862 were sent from Camp Johnson near Richmond, Va. Hunt also mentioned spending time in Gordonsville, Va. The rest of the letters were written April-July 1863 while Hunt was ill. Letters discuss war news, much of it second hand; weather; money; clothing; and Hunt's health even before he fell ill. When Hunt's regiment moved on during his illness, he lost touch with them, but he was still able to pass on news of the war to his family. In his later letters, sent from Hanover Academy Hospital near Richmond and Camp Winder Hospital in Richmond, Hunt attempted to reassure his family that he was comfortable and hopeful about his recovery. The last letter is dated ten days before his death. |
