Abstract:

Joseph Benjamin Burgin (1835-1913) of Burke County, N.C., served in the Civil War in the 22nd North Carolina Infantry Regiment, Company K, from 1861 until 1863, during which time he was promoted to Sergeant and then 2nd Lieutenant. After the Civil War, Burgin worked for the Western North Carolina Railroad and lived near Old Fort, N.C. Burgin married Margaret E. Burgin in 1859. They had four children.

The collection is an account book that documents Burgin's time in the Civil War from February to August 1862. In this small volume, he recorded information about the members of his company; supplies; and debts owed to him for food, clothing, equipment, and medical care.

Background

Biographical / historical:

Joseph Benjamin Burgin was born on 13 July 1835 in Burke County, N.C. He served in the Civil War in the 22nd North Carolina Infantry Regiment, Company K, from 1861 until 1863, during which time he was promoted to Sergeant and then 2nd Lieutenant. He was captured near Chancellorsville, Va., in May 1863; sent to the Old Capital Prison in Washington, D.C.; and released later that same month. After the Civil War, Burgin worked for the Western North Carolina Railroad and lived near Old Fort, N.C.

Burgin married Margaret E. Burgin in 1859. They had four children. Burgin died on 3 April 1913.

Scope and content:

This account book documents Joseph Benjamin Burgin's time in the Civil War from February to August 1862 with the 22nd North Carolina Infantry Regiment, Company K.

On several pages, Burgin listed the names of the men in his company, sometimes with dates or marks next to their names, possibly indicating casualities or fatalities resulting from the battles in 1862. He also seems to have loaned money to secure rations for the men, and the accounts and debts belonging to various members of the company are listed. These debts were typically for food such as bacon, beef, or butter, and sometimes equipment, clothing, or medical care.

In the book, Burgin wrote that his wife should be notified in case of his death. He also drew a map of the company's encampment in late March or early April 1862 and listed supplies used by the company.
