Charles E. Edge (1922-2005) was born in Rocky Mount, N.C. Edge served in the United States Army during World War II. After the war, he completed his B.A. and M.A. at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., then went on to earn a Ph.D. from Duke University. In 1958, he joined the English Department faculty at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where he taught for 29 years. Edge received numerous teaching awards, including two Tanner Awards for excellence in undergraduate instruction.

The collection consists of letters, 1943-1945, written by Charles E. Edge to his sweetheart, Sarah I. Davis, then a student at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., while he served in the United States Army during World War II, stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C.; Camp Lee, Va.; the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Va.; Camp Polk, La.; Holabird Signal Depot in Baltimore, Md.; New York, N.Y., and in France. Edge's love letters discuss literature and music and describe camp life and military training. Also included are one letter and one greeting card from Edge's mother to Davis.
