In 1866, an unidentified southerner possibly from Mobile, Ala., traveled to Brazil to investigate emigrating there. He chronicled the events of his journey in a diary. He sailed from Baltimore, Md., stopping at the Caribbean port of Saint Thomas and at Pernambuco, Brazil, to refuel. He arrived in the Harbor of Rio and spent three months travelling in southeastern Brazil. After making a final stop in the city of Sao Paolo, he departed for the United States.

The collection is a travel diary, 5 May-6 September 1866, of an unnamed southerner on a tour of Brazil. Early entries describe his five-week-long sea voyage from Mobile, Ala., to Brazil with accounts of life at sea and of days spent in Saint Thomas and Pernambuco while the ship was in port. Entries written while traveling in southeastern Brazil have detailed descriptions of native Brazilians and Confederate expatriates, architechture in the towns and cities, environmental conditions, and agriculture. The return sea voyage is not described in the diary. An end leaf of the diary lists places he visited: Cutia, San Roque, Sorocaba, Toledo, Torthuy, Pirapora, Porto Feliz, Itu, Capivary, Mohite Allegre, Piracicaba, Moro Azul, Yibcaba, Limisina, Santa Barbara, Campinas, Iundiahy, Perus, and Sao Paulo.
