Abstract | Teacher and writer Pollock Irwin was graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1926. He lived in Iran, 1931-1934, where he taught at the American School in Tabriz, which was operated by the Presbyterian Church USA. These experiences formed the basis of his book, A Tar Heel in Iran (1958). Irwin later taught in Burlington and Wilmington, N.C., schools, where he was active in student theater productions. He authored "The Passion of Our Lord", an Easter play that was presented for many years in Presbyterian churches in cities where he taught. The collection includes two scrapbooks prepared by Irwin, one containing clippings and photographs from his University of North Carolina days as a member of the Alpha Sigma of Chi Psi fraternity, and the other containing materials relating to Iran. Also included are a manuscript and galley proof of A Tar Heel in Iran; a 1933 travel diary and notebook from Iran; about 50 postcards from Iran, Greece, Paris, Jerusalem, and Rome; Irwin's teaching credentials; two checkbook registers; a small number of letters; photographs of Iran, productions of Irwin's Easter play, and a house, possibly Irwin's; and clippings, chiefly 1940s-1950s, relating to Christmas and Easter events, school activities, gardening, and A Tar Heel in Iran. |
