Sallie Nixon was born in Henderson, N.C. She and her husband Caldwell Nixon moved to Nebraska from North Carolina in 1967. After taking a class from poet Ted Kooser, Nixon was inspired to attend the University of Nebraska in 1969. Following her studies, she returned to North Carolina. Her collections of poetry include Surely, Goodness and Mercy (1965), Second Grace (1977), Spiraling (1990), and A Kind of Peace (2006). Nixon has served as president of the North Carolina Poetry Society, president of the North Carolina Writers Conference, and on the North Carolina Arts Council.
Ted Kooser was Poet Laureate of the United States from 2004 to 2006. He was born in Ames, Iowa, in 1939. He earned his undergraduate degree from Iowa State University in 1962 and his graduate degree from the University of Nebraska in 1968. Kooser wrote several collections of poetry including Delights & Shadows, winner of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize. Kooser is former vice-president of the insurance company Lincoln Benefit Life. As of 2006, he is a professor at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

Correspondence, mostly from Ted Kooser to Sallie Nixon. Kooser's letters include information about writing projects. Some greeting cards feature poems and paintings by Kooser. For several years, Kooser sent postcards for Valentine's Day featuring a different poem each year.
