Abstract | Thomas Michael Bello (Tommy) was born in Raleigh, N.C. From March 1970 to March 1971, he was the student body president at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In May 1970, campus life was disrupted by student unrest over the war in Vietnam and specifically the killing of four students at Kent State University. Bello was instrumental in guiding the student body and communicating with the faculty and administration during this time. The collection contains writings, correspondence, campus communications, campaign materials, and other items relating to Thomas M. Bello's tenure as student body president at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Materials chiefly concern student unrest on campus in May 1970 relating to the United States involvement in Vietnam. Also included are some of Bello's class materials, an unassembled scrapbook of clippings documenting Bello's tenure as student body president, newspaper articles and other publications such as the National Strike Information Center (Brandeis University) newsletter, and a typed copy of Bello's speech to the student body during a campus-wide protest on 6 May 1970. |
