Abstract | The documentary film Shalom Y'all, directed by third-generation southern Jew and New Orleans, La., native Brian Bain, details Jewish culture and identity in the American South. In the film, Bain travels 4,200 miles by car across the same route his grandfather took as a traveling salesman. Bain interviews a variety of southern Jews, including a Jewish African American police chief, a kosher butcher, a Golden Gloves boxer, and a former congressman. He also explores the role played by southern Jews in a variety of historical settings, such as the American Civil War, the civil rights movement, and the Ku Klux Klan. The collection consists of elements involved in the making of the film Shalom Y'all, research files, business files, and promotional materials. Elements of the film include video footage, photographic stills, audio materials, scripts, and other documents. There are also photographs of interviewees and locations featured in the film, the cast and crew while traveling and filming, and openings and other events. Back to TopThe collection consists of elements pertaining to the making of the documentary film Shalom Y'all by Brian Bain, including video footage, photographic stills, audio materials, scripts and other documents, and photographs taken during filming; research materials; business files; and promotional materials. Video footage includes road tapes of raw footage, archival tapes, vignette footage, assembly cuts, original and final trailers, and credit rolls. Audio elements include composer dubs, voice-overs, sound effects, swelltones, music, addons, loops, sound effects, pickups, and papers briefly describing portions of the audio material and printed drafts of the film script with annotated audio cuts. Scripts and other materials include electronic versions of the script and the screen credits, as well as other documents related to the making of the film. There are several hundred printed photographs and accompanying negatives taken during the filming of the documentary. Subjects include interviewees and locations featured in the film, the cast and crew, traveling and filming, and events and openings. Research materials are photographs and videos collected by Bain while conducting research for the film. Images in the photographic research materials cover a wide time span and include subjects such as southern Jewish businesses, Jewish homes, and temples; celebrations, religious ceremonies, and other gatherings; southern Jews and civil rights; individual and family portraits; and other subjects. Research video materials pertain to research done before filming of the documentary, covering a range of subjects from Mardi Gras to civil rights to college football. Research film footage also includes Shalom Y'all scout tapes. Business files consist of correspondence and other papers related to grants, loans, expense accounts, film credits, the official film logos and posters, copyright, and public relations. Images cover a wide time span, and include subjects such as southern Jewish businesses, homes, and temples; celebrations, religious ceremonies and gatherings; southern Jews and civil rights; individual and family portraits; and other subjects. Folders contains one or more related photographs or photocopies of photographs, often with additional information such as the repository in which the images are found or notes on the context and history of the images. Several folders contain contact sheets and accompanying negatives, also from museums around the South. Some folders have detailed lists of the photographs contained within written on the front of the folder.

Printed research materials on photographs used in the film and the photographs' accompanying B-roll forms, which list the scene of the film in which the image appears. Included are photocopies and computer prints of historic photographs of Jews in the South, often with accompanying notes on the people and places in the photographs; printed information on Jewish traditions and holidays; printed Jewish sermons; information on archival stills; B-roll forms; and one floppy disc with information pertaining to the research materials.
