Abstract | During the Civil War, many Confederate states, including Virginia, required slaveholders to contribute slaves to serve in the Confederate Army. This collection consists of three 1863 documents relating to Bedford County, Va., slaveholders contributing slaves for impressment into in the Confederate Army. The documents include an order to the county sheriff to summon to court slaveholders who failed to deliver the required number of slaves; a list of those to be summoned to court; and a list of slaveholders with the number of slaves owned, number of slaves hired out, and where those slaves were located. |
