Abstract:

Charles C. Haynes Jr. was born in Durham, N.C., in 1921. He attended Duke University, where he played in the 1942 Rose Bowl held in Durham. Haynes left Duke to serve as a lieutenant with the 88th Infantry Division of the United States Army during World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Silver Star for his service in North Africa and Italy. After the war, Haynes opened the Saddle Club Inc., later known as the Saddle and Fox Restaurant, in Durham. He was a certified executive chef and president of Whitt-Haynes Construction, later the Charles C. Haynes Jr. Construction Company. He died in Durham in 1994.

The collection consists of materials relating to Charles C. Haynes Jr. A 1939 diary contains entries from Haynes's time at Duke University as a student athlete. Correspondence is chiefly between Haynes and his parents during his deployment to North Africa and Italy during World War II with the 88th Infantry Division of the United States Army. Letters document homefront and military life, including mention of Haynes's interactions with African American soldiers. A notebook contains Haynes's personal recollections of service in World War II. Photographs are chiefly portraits of Haynes during World War II in Italy, but also include images of the Saddle and Fox Restaurant, groups of family members, Boy Scout photographs, and horseback riding. There are also military records, including separation and discharge papers and award notifications for the Silver Medal and the Purple Heart; receipts, probably related to the opening of the Saddle and Fox Restaurant; clippings and printed materials related to Haynes; medals, badges, and an Eagle Scout sash; and other items.

Background

Biographical / historical:

Charles C. Haynes Jr. was born in Durham, N.C., on 5 December 1921. The Haynes family operated riding stables the Durham Livery Stables and Hillandale Stables in Durham, N.C. He attended Duke University, where he was a riding instructor and a member of the football team, playing in the historic 1942 Rose Bowl held in Durham. Haynes left Duke to serve in 88th Infantry Division of the United States Army during World War II. As a lieutenant, he was awarded the Purple Heart and the Silver Star for his service in North Africa and Italy. After the war, he opened the Saddle Club Inc., later known as the Saddle and Fox Restaurant, in Durham. He was a certified executive chef and president of the Whitt-Haynes Construction, later the Charles C. Haynes Jr. Construction Company. He married Jane Barry in the 1950s. They had three children: Charles C. Haynes III, a religious studies professor; John Barry Haynes, a professor and sports coach; and Wendy Jackson Haynes Conner, a university drama instructor. Haynes married twice more and spent his final years with companion Patsy Z. Ashby. He died in Durham on 20 January 1994.
