Julia Cherry Spruill (1899-1986) was born in Rocky Mount, N.C. She attended North
Carolina College for Women in Greensboro and then returned home to teach high school.
Her marriage to Corydon Spruill brought her to Chapel Hill, N.C., where she taught
school and began the historical research that culminated in publication of her book,
Women's Life and Work in the Southern Colonies (University of North Carolina Press,
1938).
