Abstract William Hedge was a lieutenant in the 44th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment operating during the Civil War in eastern North Carolina during 1862-1863. The collection consists of six hand-drawn sketches made by William Hedge depicting Civil War scenes in the vicinities of Washington and Williamston, N.C. One of the items is a color sketch illustrating details of daily camp life, while another is a small map of the Little Creek battle fought near Williamston, N.C., on November 1862. Another color sketch, dated April 1863, provides a view of Fort Hamilton in Washington, N.C., including a log blockhouse, gun emplacements, and surrounding geographic details. There are also three small pencil sketches possibly depicting members of the infantry regiment.

William Hedge was a lieutenant in the 44th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment operating during the Civil War in eastern North Carolina during 1862-1863. The 44th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment was mustered into service in Reedville, Va., and landed at Morehead City, N.C., on 26 October 1862. After service in North Carolina, the regiment returned to Massachusetts and was mustered out in June 1863.

The collection consists of six hand-drawn sketches made by William Hedge depicting Civil War scenes in the vicinities of Washington and Williamston, N.C. One of the items is a color sketch illustrating details of daily camp life, with one soldier sitting before a fire heating coffee, two fellow soldiers sleeping on the grass, and a tent and stacked arms in the background. Another is a small map of the Little Creek battle fought near Williamston, N.C., on November 1862, including details of the number of soldiers wounded and killed on both sides. Another color sketch dated April 1863, provides a view of Fort Hamilton in Washington, N.C., including a log blockhouse, gun emplacements, and surrounding geographic details, such as the Pamlico River. There are also three small pencil sketches possibly depicting members of the infantry regiment: one writing in a desk, one leisurely sitting between two trees, and another one kneeling with a rifle.
