Back to TopThe collection contains twelve documents relating to the family's plantation and James L. Hunter's discharges from the Confederate Army. There are two undated appraisals of John M. Hunter's estate. One version contains notes and separate lists of the possessions, including slaves, of James L. Hunter and Martha Reedy within the estate; the other appears to be a more final version. There is a 1842 bill of sale for a young slave and a 1855 record of payment to John M. Hunter for a one-year loan of two slaves. The collection also contains papers relating to James L. Hunter's service in the Civil War including a 1862 certificate of disability for the discharge; two copies of the Confederate Army's Final Statements, 1864; an account of payment, 1864; a Soldier's Discharge, 1864; an exemption from service note from the South Carolina surgeon general, 1865; a certificate that James L. Hunter took an oath to support and follow the laws of the United States, 1865; and a surgeon general's letter for discharge, 1865.
