The Michal family of Hickory, N.C., is descended from French Huguenots and has resided in North Carolina, by way of Pennsylvania, since the late 18th century. William Norwood Michal, Sr. (1906-1991) and his son, William Norwood Michal, Jr. (born 1935), are graduates of the University of North Carolina, and William Norwood Michal, Sr., attended the Bingham Military School. The Michal family is also related to the Norwood, Lenoir, and McDowell families.

The collection consists of materials related to the Michal family of Hickory, N.C., and William Norwood Michal, Sr. (1906-1991) and his son, William Norwood Michal, Jr. (born 1935) are primarily represented. Papers include items from the Bingham Military School and the University of North Carolina, 1916-1929, 1954; scrapbooks of William Norwood Michal, Sr., 1923-1924, and William Norwood Michal, Jr., 1935-1962; genealogical information about the Michal and Lenoir families; real estate indentures, 1861-1862; and instantaneous discs, 1947-1950, which presumably contain audio recordings of William Norwood Michal, Jr. The collection also contains photographic negatives related to the Michal family of Hickory, N.C. A majority of the images include William Norwood Michal, Sr. and his son, William Norwood Michal, Jr. The images also depict scenes from the Bingham Military School in Asheville, N.C., and the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., circa 1920s-1940s. Also included are images depicting activities related to Duke Power Company (1927-1928) and the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (circa 1920s) for which William Norwood Michal, Sr. was employed. In addition, many of the images depict scenes from North Carolina and other southern states.

The Addition of 2017 contains papers relating to the Michal family, as well as the Lenoir and Norwood families, and primarily document family history and genealogy. Some notebooks are also included. Several notes from William Norwood Michal, Jr. reference "the 1863 letter," which is a letter from Thomas L. Norwood to his father and is part of the Lenoir Family Papers #426.

Arrangement: Chronological.

The collection consists of photographic negatives related to the Michal family of Hickory, N.C. A majority of the images include William Norwood Michal, Sr. (1906-1991) and his son, William Norwood Michal, Jr. (born 1935). The images also depict scenes from the Bingham Military School in Asheville, N.C., and the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., circa 1920s. Also included are images depicting activities related to Duke Power Company (1927-1928) and the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (circa 1920s) for which William Norwood Michal, Sr. was employed. In addition, many of the images depict scenes from North Carolina and other southern states.
