The Triangle Area Mushroom Club was founded in 1982 by William R. Burk, then the botany librarian at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Joan Zeller, a novice mushroomer. The objective of the club is "to promote a general knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of mushrooms, especially in the Research Triangle area....through programs covering identification, ecology, photography, mycophagy, literature, as well as field trips."
