Back to TopThe collection consists of correspondence, journals, and genealogical materials documenting the McCauley and McLendon families of North Carolina, 1749-2013 (bulk 1860-1900). Social correspondence, 1861-1870, of Anne McCauley of Monroe County, N.C, includes letters from a suitor, William MacRae, and a cousin, Joseph Constantine Steele, and details family news from Monroe, N.C., updates from Confederate war camps in Virginia, love letters, and poetry. J. J. McLendon of Matthews, N.C. kept journals, writing about his family and his life. One contains a biographical sketch of an enslaved man, Charles McLendon, detailing the circumstances that brought a young Charles to the McLendon family. A second notebook contains a history of the Anson Guards, 1749-1960s, and details the experiences, traditions, and names of this regiment of militia/military soldiers in Anson County, N.C. The third set of notebooks are the Civil War journals of J. J. McLendon. The collection also includes articles about the McCauley family as well as genealogical materials.
