He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II from January 1944 to May 1946, and continued to serve in the United States Air Force Reserve until March 1961. After the war, Baldwin studied political science at the University of North Carolina and became involved in various political organizations and activist groups, including the United World Federalists. He graduated in 1950 and began working as a newspaper writer and editor, at some point with the Charlotte Observer. He later owned import-export businesses and worked as a technical writer and engineer. Baldwin was instrumental in the establishment of Leland, N.C., as a formal town in 1989, and served as its first mayor.
