expand/collapse Expand/collapse Historical Information

The Cooleemee Historical Association (CHA) in Cooleemee, N.C., a former textile mill company town in Davie County, N.C., was founded in 1989 largely through the efforts of Jim Rumley and Lynn Rumley, labor union organizers who moved to Cooleemee in the 1980s. The CHA opened the Textile Heritage Center museum in the historic Zachary-Holt House on Church Street in 1993 and the Mill House Museum in a restored mill town cottage on Joyner Street in 2005. The CHA had an active educational program called "Discovering Our Heritage," which served local elementary schools, and the organization hosted the annual Textile Heritage Festival. The CHA also led the Southwide Textile Heritage Initiative, which had a mission "to preserve the history and heritage of the Southern cotton mill people, and to tell their story to future generations." 1

In 2014, the CHA submitted an application for the Cooleemee Mill Town Historic District to the National Register of Historic Places.

In addition to their work with the CHA, the Rumleys also assembled and maintained a community archive of family and personal records, mill and mill town documents, interviews, and photographs. These materials were donated to the Southern Historical Collection in 2016 and now comprise the Cooleemee Mill Town Collection and the Cooleemee, N.C., Photograph Collection. The CHA closed the Textile Heritage Center in December 2016.
