Abstract The undated open-reel audiotape contains traditional songs collected and recorded by Herbert Shellans in Mount Airy, N.C. Female and male vocalists including Shellans performed the songs, and some were sung with accompaniment of autoharp and guitar. Song titles include "Broken Engagement," "Oh Willy My Darlin Come Back," "Old 97," and "Froggy Went-a-Courtin." Shellans may have recorded these songs for his book Folk Songs of the Blue Ridge Mountains : 50 Traditional Songs as Sung by the People of the Blue Ridge Mountains Country. Acquired as part of the Southern Folklife Collection.
