Abstract	Tom Davenport is a white independent filmmaker and film distributor living in Delaplane, Va. He began work in film with documentary filmmakers Richard Leacock and Don Pennebacker in New York and made his first independent film in 1969. In 1970, he returned to rural Virginia and started an independent film company with his wife Mimi Davenport as co-producer and designer. The collection includes materials documenting the making of Tom Davenport's films It Ain't City Music, about country music; Born for Hard Luck, about Arthur Jackson (also known as Peg Leg Sam), a harmonica player, singer, and comedian who performed in medicine shows; The Shakers, about the Sabbathday Lake Shaker community, New Gloucester, Me., and the Canterbury Shaker community, Canterbury, N.H.; Being a Joines: A Life in the Brushy Mountains, about the Joines family of North Carolina; A Singing Stream: A Black Family Chronicle, which documents the Landis Family of Creedmore, N.C., and other local gospel singing groups; the series From the Brothers Grimm, retellings of classic Brothers Grimm fairy tales set in Delaplane, Va.; The Ballad of Frankie Silver, which tells the story of Frances Silver, who was hanged for the murder of her husband Charles Silver; Remembering the High Lonesome, about John Cohen, a filmmaker and photographer, and his work in rural Kentucky in the 1950s; When My Work Is Over, which tells the story of African American storyteller Louise Anderson; Remembering Emmanuel Church, which tells the oral history of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Fauquier County, Virginia; and a recording of a concert performed by the New Lost City Ramblers string band in February of 2000. Included are grant applications, transcripts, field notes, correspondence, financial material, study guides, production related notes, and publicity related to each of these films. There are also release prints of select films; recordings that contain interviews and other sound used for these films; moving image materials used in the creating of these films; materials relating to other film projects directed by Tom Davenport; printed materials relating to Davenport; posters advertising Davenport's films; and other items. Other materials include photographic documentation of Texas farmworker marchers, white and African-American communities in the Ozarks and the Delta of Arkansas; Henry Atkins, the first African American to run for Congress in Arkansas; Bobby K. Hayes campaigning for a U.S. Senate; and portraits of people in line outside Robert Kennedy's funeral at St. Patrick's Cathedral. The addition of January 2024 (Acc. 20240207.1) contains film elements for Davenport's 1968 film "Flowers." The film shows Davenport's early development as a filmmaker. The film features Davenport's parents, Robert and Elizabeth Davenport, on their farm ("Hollin") in the Crooked Run Valley between Delaplane, Va., and Paris, Va.

Tom Davenport is a white independent filmmaker and film distributor living in Delaplane, Va. He was graduated from Yale University, went to Hong Kong with a Yale program to teach English at New Asia College, and spent several years in Taiwan studying Chinese language and culture. He began work in film with documentary filmmakers Richard Leacock and Don Pennebacker in New York and made his first independent film in 1969 on the Chinese martial art of T'ai Chi. In 1970, he returned home to rural Virginia and started an independent film company with his wife Mimi Davenport as co-producer and designer.

Beginning in 1976, Tom Davenport began a collaboration with Daniel Patterson and the Curriculum in Folklore at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that resulted in the American Traditional Culture series of documentary films, which included Born for Hard Luck, Being a Joines: A Life in the Brushy Mountains, A Singing Stream: A Black Family Chronicle, The Ballad of Frankie Silver, and When My Work is Over: The Life and Stories of Louise Anderson.

Other materials include photographic documentation of a trip Phil Carter and Tom Davenport made to Wynne, Arkansas, in the summer of 1968. Photographic prints, negatives, and contact sheets depict scenes from white and African-American communities in the Ozarks and the Delta; Henry Atkins, the first African American to run for Congress in Arkansas; and Bobby K. Hayes of Calico Rock, Arkansas, campaigning for a U.S. Senate seat against Senator William Fulbright. There are also photographs taken by Davenport in New Jersey (1965-1969) and New York City (1963-1969), including portraits of people in line outside Robert Kennedy's funeral at St. Patrick's Cathedral, 8 June 1968, and a collection of images titled "Texas farmworker marchers 1965."

The addition of January 2024 (Acc. 20240207.1) contains film elements for Davenport's 1968 film "Flowers." The film shows Davenport's early development as a filmmaker. Materials documenting the making of Tom Davenport's 1973 film It Ain't City Music. There are black-and-white photographs and color slides documenting the National Country Music Contest in Warrenton, Va., as well as a study guide for use with the film. Also included are audiotapes and moving image material recorded for use with the film. Films are described according to existing documentation on the original container or film. In most cases, the film descriptions are transcribed directly from the containers. Documentation on the containers or film includes codes and documentary film terminology. Documentary film terminology for work print materials includes wild pix, wild track, MOS, wild sound, wilds, dub, dubbing, mix, and loops. Original camera film is often labeled dailies. Please note that the majority of the film work prints have been sepearted into picture and magnetic sound elements for preservation reasons. These sepearted work print elements are titled as work prints.

Materials documenting the production of Tom Davenport's 1976 film Born for Hard Luck. The subject of the film was Arthur Jackson, also known as Peg Leg Sam. He was a harmonica player, singer, and comedian who performed in medicine shows, which were traveling groups that sold medicines between entertainment acts. Included are field notes of conversations with Peg Leg Sam, subtitles for the film, photographs of Peg Leg Sam, grant application materials, correspondence, and receipts from supplies purchased for the film. Also included is a study guide and publicity material. Finally, there are audiotapes of interviews with Peg Leg Sam, as well as moving image material created for use in this film. Most of the material is undated.

The film primarily depicts the Sabbathday Lake Shaker community, New Gloucester, Me., and the Canterbury Shaker community, Canterbury, N.H. Also included are photographs that Davenport requested from various institutions for his research and for use in the production of the film. Information about the production of Davenport's 1986 film, A Singing Stream. This film documents the Landis Family of Creedmore, N.C. Included are several grant applications, transcripts of the film and sound recordings, correspondence, photographs of the Landis family and other local gospel singing groups, memorabilia, promotional material, and production related notes. There are audiotapes of interviews with the Landis family, other sound used in the film, and audio recordings made at Bertha Landis' funeral on 14 June 2000. Finally, there is moving image material used in the creation of this film.

Moving image material related to A Singing Stream. Films are described according to existing documentation on the original container or film. In most cases, the film descriptions are transcribed directly from the containers. Documentation on the containers or film includes codes and documentary film terminology. Documentary film terminology for work print materials includes wild pix, wild track, MOS, wild sound, wilds, dub, dubbing, mix, and loops. Original camera film is often labeled dailies. Please note that the majority of the film work prints have been sepearted into picture and magnetic sound elements for preservation reasons. These sepearted work print elements are titled as work prints, while stand-alone film magnetic soundtrack elements are titled as magnetic soundtracks.
