Abstract | The World and Identity in Ritual Action Collection consists of field recordings, papers, and photographs related to the 1981-1984 National Endowment for the Humanities grant-funded project, "World and Identity in Ritual Action: A Comparative Study in American Sectarian Religion." Conducted principally by Daniel W. Patterson, James L. Peacock, Ruel W. Tyson, white University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill professors, and Beverly Bush Boggs (later Beverly Bush Patterson), a white doctoral graduate student, the interdisciplinary grant supported the field work and study of white Primitive Baptist churches in northwest North Carolina and southwest Virginia, including churches in Alleghany County, N.C, Ashe County, N.C., and Grayson County, Va., as well as Harnett County in eastern North Carolina. Most of the collection is made up of field recordings, 1970-1987, with corresponding field notes. Field recordings consist of sermons, songs, and oral history interviews with Primitive Baptist church elders and members, including Walter Evans, Sonny Pyle, Dewey Roten, Carrie Severt, and Edd Severt, among others. Daniel Patterson, Beverly Bush Boggs, James L. Peacock, Debra Warner, Cece Conway, and Ruel Tyson recorded the majority of the field recordings between 1977 and 1983 as part of their research effort. The collection also contains video recordings of Primitive Baptist services held in Grayson County, Va., as well as audio recordings that predate the grant project, including dubbed radio broadcasts, tapes dubbed from church members' private collections, and preliminary field recordings created by Daniel W. Patterson, Blanton Owen, Beverly Bush Patterson, and Tom Rankin. Papers found in the collection are comprised mostly of printed materials by or about Primitive Baptists, including newsletters and periodicals, directories, Primitive Baptist Association minutes, and photocopies of articles, manuscripts, and publications. Other papers include notes by Daniel W. Patterson and others, as well as papers related to Beverly Bush Patterson and Tom Rankin's preliminary field work. The collection also contains photographic slides, 1982-1985, taken by Beverly Bush Patterson and Daniel W. Patterson. Photographs depict Primitive Baptist churches, church members, church events, and hymn books. |

Archival processing of the World and Identity in Ritual Action Collection was made possible through a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
Since August 2017, we have added ethnic and racial identities for individuals and families represented in collections. To determine identity, we rely on self-identification; other information supplied to the repository by collection creators or sources; public records, press accounts, and secondary sources; and contextual information in the collection materials. Omissions of ethnic and racial identities in finding aids created or updated after August 2017 are an indication of insufficient information to make an educated guess or an individual's preference for identity information to be excluded from description. When we have misidentified, please let us know at wilsonlibrary@unc.edu.

"World and Identity in Ritual Action: A Comparative Study in American Sectarian Religion" was a 1981-1984 National Endowment for the Humanities grant-funded project conducted by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill professors, Daniel W. Patterson (English, Curriculum in Folklore), James L. Peacock (Anthropology), Ruel W. Tyson (Religion), and Anthropology and Folklore doctoral student, Beverly Bush Boggs (later Beverly Bush Patterson), among others. The interdisciplinary grant supported the field work and study of white Primitive Baptist churches in northwest North Carolina and southwest Virginia, including churches in Alleghany County, N.C, Ashe County, N.C., and Grayson County, Va., as well as Harnett County in eastern North Carolina.
As the grant proposal states, the field work sought "to produce a description and comparison of the Wesleyan and Calvinist streams of religious culture in the American South," by exploring the "worlds of sectarian groups and the self-perceived identities of their members." The research focused on forms of ritual action, including testimony, song, sermon, and movement. Methods of study employed during the project included participant observation of ritual actions, the recording of songs and oral history interviews, and archival research.
In early stages of the grant project, fieldwork was also conducted with white Pentecostal churches in Durham, N.C., as well as with Lumbee Pentecostal churches in Robeson County, N.C. As the grant progressed, the fieldwork became focused on white Primitive Baptists in the central Piedmont region of North Carolina and Virginia, while also including work with Elder Worth Stevenson, who pastored churches in Harnett County, N.C.
Publications related to the World and Identity grant project include Ruel W. Tyson, James A. Peacock, and Daniel W. Patterson's edited volume of essays, Diversities of Gifts: Field Studies in Southern Religion (University of Illinois Press, 1988), which includes an essay by Tyson, "The Testimony of Sister Annie Mae," based on an earlier field project with Lumbee Pentecostal Churches and Beverly Bush Patterson's essay, "Finding a Home in the Church: Primitive Baptist Women," based on the doctoral dissertation she wrote from participation in the project. A revised version of Beverly Bush Patterson's dissertation was later published as The Sound of the Dove: Singing in Appalachian Primitive Baptist Churches (University of Illinois Press, 1995) and was followed by her essay "Forging Religious Identity: An Exploration of Hymn Singing in Anglo-American Primitive Baptist Churches," in Benjamin Lloyd's Hymn Book: A Primitive Baptist Song Tradition (Alabama Folklife Association, 1999). Ruel W. Tyson and James A. Peacock also published Pilgrims of Paradox: Calvinism and Experience among Primitive Baptists of the Blue Ridge (Smithsonian Institution Press, 1989), along with the essay "Multiplying by Dividing" in T. Evens and James Peacock, eds. Transcendence in Society: Case Studies (Jai Press, 1990).

Most of the collection is made up of field recordings, 1970-1987.
Field recordings, 1970-1987, consist mostly of audio recordings of Primitive Baptist services, oral history interviews with Primitive Baptist church elders and members, including Walter Evans, Sonny Pyle, Dewey Roten, Carrie Severt, and Edd Severt, and songs recorded at Primitive Baptist churches and at private homes in various locations, including Sparta, N.C., Whitehead, N.C., Baywood, Va., West Jefferson, N.C., and Independence, Va. Daniel Patterson, Beverly Bush Boggs, James Peacock, Debra Warner, Cece Conway, and Ruel Tyson recorded the majority of the field recordings between 1977 and 1983 as part of their research effort. The collection also contains audio recordings and associated materials that predate the grant project, including dubbed radio broadcasts of Baptist Bible Hour, tapes dubbed from the private collections of church members, and preliminary field recordings created by Daniel W. Patterson, Blanton Owen, Beverly Bush Patterson, and Tom Rankin. In July of 1970, Daniel W. Patterson and folklorist, Blanton Owen, produced a preliminary field recording of a Primitive Baptist church service conducted by Elder Walter Evans in Sparta, N.C. (FT-20063/2128), and from 1980 to 1981 Beverly Bush Patterson and Tom Rankin conducted additional preliminary field work at the Bethel Christian Center in Durham, N.C. (FS-20063/16697-16727) and at the Oak Grove Holiness Church in Red Springs, N.C. (FS-20063/16728-16771). At the time of these field recordings, Bethel Christian Center was a white Pentecostal church affiliated with the Full Gospel Fellowship of Churches and Ministers, International, while Oak Grove Holiness Church was a Lumbee Pentecostal church located in Robeson County near Lumberton, N.C. The collection also includes an audiocassette of Ruel W. Tyson's comments and suggestions to Beverley Bush Patterson regarding the grant project (FS-20063/16772). Audio recordings are on audiocassette and 1/4" open reel audio taped on a Nagra recorder.
Video field recordings, 1983, document Primitive Baptist church services held at Primitive Baptist churches in Grayson County, Va., including the Crossroads Primitive Baptist Church in Baywood, Va. and at Peach Bottom Primitive Baptist Church near Independence, Va. The video recordings mostly document preaching and foot washing services.
Field notes, most of which correspond to the audio recordings found in the collection, consist of tape indexes, tape logs, transcripts, memos, and photocopies of original audio containers. Please note that the collection also contains fields notes for audio recordings not held in the collection.
Papers, 1871-1994, consist mostly of printed materials by or about Primitive Baptists, including Primitive Baptist Association minutes, catalogs, pamphlets, programs, directories, and small-print publications, as well as, photocopies of articles, manuscripts, and publications. Also included are papers related to Beverly Bush Patterson and Tom Rankin's preliminary fieldwork with Bethel Christian Center and Oak Grove Holiness Church, census data from North Carolina and Virginia, a microfilm copy of British Baptists minutes from the 17th century, and notes by Daniel W. Patterson and others on subjects, such as early English Baptists and Primitive Baptist musicians.
Photographic slides, 1982-1985, were taken by Beverly Bush Patterson and Daniel W. Patterson and depict Primitive Baptist churches, church members, church members' homes, church events, and hymn books.

Arrangement: Field notes are, for the most part, arranged by their corresponding audio recording call number (FT-, FS-). General documents, such as tape indexes and shelf lists are listed at the beginning of the subseries. Field notes without corresponding audio recordings are placed last and are mostly arranged by their original number (WI-).
Field notes consist of tape indexes, tape logs, transcripts, memos, and photocopies of original audio containers. Most of the field notes correspond to the audio recordings found in the collection (folders 1-133, 230-245), while others correspond to audio recordings not held in the collection (folders 134-165, 246-251).
Processing information: Folders 6-61, 63-133 were formerly in Southern Folklife Collection Field Notes (#30025), folders 225-309, 675-716, 911-912. Titles for Folders 6-133, 230-245 include call numbers of corresponding audio recording (FT-, FS-). Titles for folders 124-165 include original number (WI-), while folders 246-251 are arranged and titled by church name.
