Abstract The David E. Whisnant Collection consists of audio recordings and other materials compiled by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Professor Emeritus of English, David E. Whisnant. The recordings comprise of live performances, interviews, and dubbed radio recordings. Artists or interviewees featured on the recordings include the Blue Sky Boys, Bill Bolick, Garland Bolick, the Burke Family Gospel Singers, and Norman Edmonds, among others. Other materials found in the collection include a publicity photograph of D.L. Menard and the Louisiana Aces and student papers from David E. Whisnant's fall 1991 course, The Politics of Country Music, at UNC-Chapel Hill.

David Eugene Whisnant is an author and Professor Emeritus of English at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Whisnant is a native of Asheville, N.C. He received a B.S. from Georgia Institute of Technology, an M.A. and Ph.D. from Duke University, and an M.S.W. from UNC-Chapel Hill. His major publications include James Boyd (1972), Modernizing the Mountaineer: People, Power and Planning in Appalachia (1981; rev. ed. 1994), All That Is Native and Fine: The Politics of Culture in an American Region (1983), and Rascally Signs in Sacred Places: The Politics of Culture in Nicaragua (1995).
