John F. Garst is a white Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at the University of Georgia. Garst received his bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Mississippi State University in 1954 and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Iowa State University in 1957. He is also an American folk songs and ballads researcher. Garst co-edited a 1973 edition of John G. McCurry's "The Social Harp," a collection of shape-note music, with Daniel W. Patterson.
