Abstract The Cherrill P. Heaton Collection consists mostly of personal copies of bluegrass music compiled by banjo player and retired University of North Florida professor, Cherrill P. Heaton. The audio recordings, circa 1950-1977, feature radio shows and live performances by bluegrass musicians, including live recordings made at the New River Ranch in Rising Sun, Md. and Sunset Park in West Grove, Pa. Notable artists featured on these recordings include Red Allen, Foggy Mountain Boys, Bill Monroe, Reno & Smiley, and the Stanley Brothers, among others. The collection also contains digital media relating to Earl Scruggs funeral service and tributes held in 2012, including audio recordings of the service and tribute performances and digital scans of photographs and programs.

Cherrill Heaton is a banjo player and author of instrument instruction manuals and articles on folk music, most notably, “The Five String Banjo in North Carolina” for Southern Folklore Quarterly. He attended graduate school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the early 1960s, and in the mid-1970s joined the English faculty at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla. Heaton was also instrumental in the creation of Earl Scruggs Day in the state of North Carolina. On 6 January 1984, Cherrill presented North Carolina Governor James B. Hunt's proclamation of Earl Scruggs Day to Scruggs on behalf of the governor.

The Cherrill P. Heaton Collection consists mostly of personal copies of bluegrass music compiled by banjo player and retired University of North Florida professor, Cherrill P. Heaton. Digital media consists of audio recordings of the service and tribute performances, as well as digital scans of photographs and programs. Digital audio recordings are on .mp3 and .aiff files, while images are on .jpeg, .tif, and .docx files.
