Background

Biographical / historical:

Roger McGuinn (1942- ) is a musician, songwriter, and producer. Born James Joseph McGuinn III in Chicago, Ill., he has used the names Jim McGuinn and Roger McGuinn professionally. He was a founding member of the 1960s folk and psychedelic rock band The Byrds. After the group disbanded, McGuinn collaborated with Bob Dylan, original members of The Byrds Gene Clark and Chris Hillman, and other others including Gram Parsons. He has also toured extensively as a solo act. Since 1995, McGuinn has recorded folk songs for his website Folk Den, which is hosted by UNC School of Information and Library Science's digital archive, ibiblio.org.

The collection of white musician, songwriter, and producer Roger McGuinn contains an audiocassette oral history interview with McGuinn conducted in 2000 by John Covach, Paul Jones, and Steve Weiss and a 1999 CD-R compilation of folk songs recorded for McGuinn's website Folk Den. Acquired as part of the Southern Folklife Collection.
